Keeping house feels really heavy when you're in the thick of motherhood and trying to juggle it all. Between cleaning, tightening, organizing decluttering, and teaching your kids to help out. If your house is messy and cluttered. It can seem impossible to keep a clean house. But managing our homes is something that we need to be able to do for a lifetime.
And I think it's about time that we make it realistic.
In today's episode, we're covering three mistakes that you may inadvertently be making with your home because awareness is always the first step.
Hey there, I'm Nicole from The Maximizing Momma, and I am obsessed with creating a home that gives me more peace of mind, more time to myself and more time with my kids. I teach you the tried and true secrets to clearing your clutter, getting organized, and managing your household in a realistic and sustainable way.
This show is where we talk about things like motherhood, decluttering, organizing, creating routines, mindset, energy, and everything in between. Our homes are the foundation for the rest of our lives, and it's so important to have a calm, relaxing household so you can have the time, the peace of mind, and the freedom to truly enjoy motherhood.
So sit back and get ready to take charge of your home. Hello. Hello and welcome to the Take Charge of Your Home Show. Today, we're talking about mistakes that you may inadvertently be making when trying to get organized and keep a clean house. And we're going to get right into it. The first mistake is when you're focusing solely on getting organized. This shows up when you're trying to organize different areas of your home over and over again. So essentially you're buying baskets and bins to try and contain all the stuff in your home.
Or when you're rearranging or things and attempting to make certain areas look more neat and orderly, or even if you have ever taken everything out of a space, just to sort it all into different piles, that way you could put everything back in a more organized way. And I actually call this the organizing trap because it's something that we're doing repeatedly.
But the thing is it will never lead to any long-term change when your house is messy. Because when your home is full of things that you want to keep, as well as things that you need to get rid of, organizing is not realistic or sustainable. And it does seem like a very logical solution, but that's because that is what we have been taught to do. The Home Edit has taught us that we need to organize different areas of our home and buy their bins at Walmart for 24 bucks. I think they are. And then ar range, our stuff in the order of the rainbow colors. And society in general has drilled into us for our entire lives that being organized is the key to a great life.
But as long as you're doing this, as long as you're trying to organize when your house is messy, you will be spinning your wheels and just shuffling your things around indefinitely. And when I say shuffling things around. As an example. I mean, like, let's say you have a console table and it's full of stuff, like it's piled high with a bunch of random things. So you decide to organize it and deal with all the things that are on that table.
So you move all those things to another area of your home. But then in a month or so, that second area starts getting messy and cluttered. So you take those same items and move them somewhere else, like you're trying to find somewhere else to put them.
So that's basically shuffling your things around from room to room, just trying to make everything look more neat and tidy.
Now, there are several reasons why this is happening, why we get stuck in this organizing trap.
But I want to break down one of the reasons today. One of the reasons why we get stuck in this organizing trap. So you're trying to organize over and over again. But what ends up happening is that your house keeps getting messy and cluttered. All over again, repeatedly for months, or maybe even years on end.
And that brings me to the second mistake that we inadvertently make, which is following too many different experts because of the fact that you're trying to find a different solution. , or a new strategy or a new method to help you solve the mess and the clutter. So when you're organizing different areas, but your house is still messy and cluttered, you end up trying to find a different solution.
It doesn't help that we have a plethora of information available at our fingertips at all times. So it's totally normal to try and implement all different kinds of advice that we find online. As a matter of fact, this is what information overload is. It's happening to millions of people. Where we can access every single thing that we need at a moment's notice. So if we're trying to achieve a goal or if something that we're working towards is not working, we naturally look to try and find something else to help us solve the problem.
But when it comes to trying to create an organized home, there are so many different solutions available that you can choose from. So, When you're looking online and following different experts and really trying to find something else to help you solve the mess that's in your home, the methods that you could access that you could find online could be anything along the lines of. Teach your kids to clean up after themselves or follow a cleaning schedule, or you need to implement a daily reset and tidy up every single day, or you need to get organized or you need to ditch the clutter, or you need to become a minimalist or you need to do this, or you need to do that. And on and on and on.
And I know that's not your intention. You're not trying to follow dozens of different experts and try all these different solutions. And that's why I keep using the word inadvertently here, because we're inadvertently doing it. We're not doing it on purpose. It's just something that has happened because we live in the information age where we have access to all these different things online, at our fingertips, at a moment's notice.
But here's what I really want you to take away from this. Following dozens of different experts and trying to piece together, random bits of advice will never result in longterm progress in your home. Because none of those methods actually work together. So all of these different methods, I call them the home life industry, they were never meant to fit together. They don't work together.
But then when you're following all of them and trying to implement all these solutions, What happens as a result? You're trying to do it all. You've tried organizing. You have tried decluttering. You're always tidying and cleaning up after your kids and teaching your kids to clean up after themselves. And you're putting things back where they belong.
So, if you're doing all of these things, why is it then that nothing is working. Why is it that your house keeps getting cluttered all over again? Why is it that you organize one room and then you move on to the next, only for the first room to get messy again.
The reason why none of this is working is because you're not focusing on those concepts in the right order. There are so many different experts and methods that you can follow to help you with your home. From the Home Edit to Marie Kondo and the Fly Lady and more.
But. None of them actually work together. So on any given day, You're doing the dishes and the laundry. You're clearing off your counters, you're decluttering a cabinet, organizing your kids' toys, hiding things in closets, picking up the messes, rearranging your things and trying to figure out where to put stuff, tidying up and resetting your house. And basically you're doing this all sporadically.
So that's what the third mistake is that you're inadvertently making in your home. You're doing everything randomly in no particular order. All because organizing has not been working for you.
So you have resulted to trying to implement all these different home life concepts that you have found online. t's this endless cycle. Now I actually call it the home life cycle. And it truly never ends. As long as you're unaware that this is happening, this could go on for several years, because that's exactly what happened to me.
So those are the three mistakes that we make when trying to keep a clean, tidy, organized home.
The first one is solely trying to get organized and not putting enough time and attention into decluttering or overhauling the mess.
The second one is following too many different experts and trying to implement too many different methods to solve the problem of having a messy home. And then the third mistake is doing everything randomly and sporadically with no real plan in place.
So, if you resonate with anything that I have mentioned today, I want you to know, first of all, that it is not your fault. This is what we have been taught and encouraged to do in, again, the information age that we live in. So, as I said, we have access to everything that we could ever need at our fingertips. And we have spent our entire lives being encouraged to do more and try harder and keep hustling in order to reach our goals.
So with the plethora of home life advice that we have available, coupled with our tendency to keep hustling, it's only natural that you have resorted to making these mistakes unknowingly. So it is not your fault if you have been doing this. And the second thing I want you to know is that you are not alone.
