Constantly Tidying Is Not How to Keep a Neat and Tidy Home
===
[00:00:00] It's easy to think that constantly tidying is how you can create a neat and tidy home. But tidy ing up is actually more of a maintenance thing for you to stay on top of the messes and keep them from coming back. When you need to transform your entire household from messy and cluttered to calm and organized, tidying up is not the solution.
Hey there, I'm Nicole from The Maximizing Momma, and I am obsessed with creating a home that gives me more peace of mind, more time to myself and more time with my kids. I teach you the tried and true secrets to clearing your clutter, getting organized, and managing your household in a realistic and sustainable way.
This show is where we talk about things like motherhood, decluttering, organizing, creating routines, mindset, energy, and everything in between. Our homes are the foundation for the rest of our lives, and it's so important to [00:01:00] have a calm, relaxing household so you can have the time, the peace of mind, and the freedom to truly enjoy motherhood.
So sit back and get ready to take charge of your home.
When I had four kids under eight, and my house was a total wreck. I was spending all of my time cleaning up after my children's childhoods. It felt like I spent every waking minute walking behind them, cleaning up, tidying, and ,straightening the small piles of stuff that were accumulating around our home. But it never made a difference because my house kept getting messy and cluttered all over again. And I remember feeling so defeated, like that was it. Like that was what I was going to be dealing with, that's what I was going to have to do to manage my household for the next 18 years. So now all these years later, [00:02:00] I have learned that's what most people think. That the constant tidying is required in order to have a neat and tidy home. And they really think that they just need to do a better job of tidying up. But I can say with certainty that it will never create the orderly, tidy home that you're wanting to achieve. Now tidying up and cleaning up is necessary in order to maintain your household and to manage the messes and stay on top of them. But when it comes to transforming your home from messy and cluttered to calm and orderly, tidying is not the solution.
Think of it like this. Constantly tidying up is like trying to cure the flu with Tylenol. It masks the symptoms, but it doesn't actually solve the problem. The symptoms are the mess. [00:03:00] So the constant tidying will mask the messes as you are really attempting to make certain areas look more orderly. But the real problem, the root of the problem is the hidden clutter.
In our last episode, we were breaking down how all clutter is not created equally. There are in fact, both surface level messes and hidden clutter. Actually, there are three messes in total. But we're not going to get into that right now. So the root of the problem is the fact that the hidden clutter is taking up all your storage areas, leaving you no room for the messes and the items that you're using daily, which is why they keep getting left out because you don't have anywhere else to put them. So if you're constantly tidying up, these messes are going to keep getting left out everywhere as long as you have true, hidden clutter, hidden away behind [00:04:00] closed doors. So with all of this in mind, that means that you are off the hook when it comes to spending all of your time tidying up. It is necessary from one day to the next. And I do recommend spending about 15 minutes tidying up and putting things back where they belong. But when it comes to dealing with the piles of things that are accumulating around your home, especially when they're much smaller piles of things, those are really going to be considered clutter.
