Hello and welcome back to to the Take Charge of Your Home Show. Today, I want to share with you a concept called overhauling. This is a concept I developed to help me take control of my own messy home. Because when I started decluttering in 2018, I was letting go of a lot of stuff from my garage. But my house was messier than ever. And I didn't have any room to move those things to a storage area because my garage was still full of stuff.
And this seems to be the case for most of the people that I talk to, they want to declutter and they know they need to declutter. But [00:02:00] they aren't really sure what to do with the things they want to keep. And maybe you can relate. Maybe you feel like you don't have room for your things, and that's why your house is always a mess. And it's also why it's always cluttered. Well, when this happens, when you have both clutter and messes, de cluttering doesn't work because there is the surface level messes. And then there's also the hidden clutter. So you have all the messes on the surface level of your home. And these will most likely be the things that you use pretty frequently, the items that you use and want to keep. And then you have hidden clutter behind closed doors in your closets cabinets, drawers, bins, piles, and boxes.
And here's the kicker. The reason why the surface level messes are getting left out again and again, is because you don't have room to store them anywhere else because the hidden clutter is [00:03:00] taking up all of your storage spaces. So when your house is a mess. Getting started with de cluttering can feel impossible because there's so much stuff everywhere. And it all goes beyond just basic clutter. There are several different types of things that are causing your house to be messy and cluttered. There's actually something that I call the Big Three Messes. And we have another episode that tells you all about what those are. But this is why I developed this concept called Overhauling. And it is a total game changer in your home. Because overhauling helps you clean up the messes and tackle all those messy areas one step at a time. So I want you to think about the area in your house that seems to get messy most often. Maybe it's your living room because you have young kids or [00:04:00] it could be your kitchen, the heart of your home, or it could even be like a flat surface where everyone tends to drop all of their stuff. Well, this area that you're thinking about, the reason why it seems so bad is because there's too much stuff there now. Now you're probably thinking duh Nicole, I know there's too much stuff there, but what I mean is that there's no room for the messes, for the items that you're using daily. So if your living room is constantly a disaster, it's not because your kids have toys everywhere because they will always have toys everywhere until they reach seven or eight because toys are a part of life. And there are a huge part of motherhood and even a whole toy box dumped on the floor, it's not really that messy, it just seems that way because there are other messes in random places, and because you don't have anywhere to put the toys. So you may have bins [00:05:00] overflowing with toys on the shelves in your living room and boxes piled up in the corner. So that means that all of the homeless clutter and the accumulated clutter are mixed in with the everyday messes and together, that's why your living room is a disaster. But when you can overhaul the mess, you're gaining traction in your home and truly making progress toward a more tidy peaceful household. Instead of just tidying up and rearranging your things or shuffling stuff from room to room, you can overhaul the mess, find a home for the things that you don't know what to do with and take charge of the entire room. And then the toys on the floor won't seem so bad. Because as I said, toys on the floor are to be expected, especially when you're a parent. They're really a sign that you have healthy and happy children. But [00:06:00] when you overhaul the mess, You'll tackle the other areas in that space. So that way you can have more room for the toys that are getting left out. And that means your house will be way easier to tidy. Because you will have cleared away the messes that were piling up in the other spaces of your living room, for example. So then when your kids dump their toy box onto the floor, you can easily tidy it up and put everything back where it belongs because you will have overhauled the mess.
So if, you know, you need to declutter, but you can't seem to get started or, you don't know where to start, or you don't know what to do with the messes or you feel like you don't have room for the things that you want to keep, or if you just want your house to be clean first. If you have everyday messes piled up in your main living areas, as well as laundry and dishes that you're falling behind on, paper stacked on the [00:07:00] counters and clutter shoved in the corners of each room...
You see when your house is like this, it feels so overwhelming that of course you can't declutter. All you want to do is clean up the messes. But if you're spending all your time cleaning and tidying up, Then you get stuck in a never ending cycle of tidying because there was so much clutter in your home that you don't have anywhere to put these items. Which is again, why they're getting left out all the time. Like the charging cord that's been on your dining room table for weeks. If you had less clutter, you would have space to find that charger a permanent home, and then you could easily put it back where it belongs.
So overhauling is about overtaking those messy areas. Finding a home for the things that you want to keep and developing routines to help you keep the messes from coming back.
It's about conquering the mess, the di saster, and [00:08:00] the chaos. It's where you literally take charge of your home. And when you can do this, you will have a tidy, manageable household, you will know right where everything is, and you'll be able to put everything away more easily. You'll have a lot more free time because you won't be looking for lost items every other day and always tidying up. You'll have peace of mind and a lot more mental clarity.
And you will feel super confident and motivated to start decluttering like a boss. Now overhauling is stage one of a process. There are actually four stages to taking charge of your home. And that is exactly what we're getting into in our next episode, why tackling your home in stages will help you transform your entire household from messy to organized without wasting all of your time, without the confusion, and [00:09:00] without the overwhelm. Then we have another episode coming that will lay out the four phase process in depth so you can have the complete roadmap and implement all the different stages in your own home. So then you can finally finally have an organized, peaceful home and be able to maintain it all for good.
