Day 4 - Nightstand
===
[00:00:00] Hello, welcome back to day four of the new year new space decluttering challenge today. We're going to be talking about clearing away the clutter from your nightstand or somewhere around your bed. Now every time I have people declutter their nightstand, it seems as if the entire session is always devoted to putting things back where they belong, tackling the everyday messes.
And while yes, that is something that will need to be done if your nightstand has a lot of things left out on it, the purpose of this challenge is to let go of the clutter that no longer aligns with your life in 2024.
So for today's podcast motivator, I want to encourage you to find items in or around your nightstand that you no longer need, use, or want. We're not focusing on the everyday messes that need to be put back where they belong. If you want to do that, if you [00:01:00] want to clear off the top of your nightstand and put things back where they go, you can definitely take the time to do that.
But for this task for today, we're going to be focusing on clearing away the clutter. So these items. They could be in your drawers or it could be on the floor somewhere around your bed, around the space that you wake in each morning. Today. I want you to find that space in your bedroom. For many of you, I assume that this might be a smallish pile of things that has accumulated near your bed.
According to Feng Shui. Things that we love and use often have strong, active energy around them. Whereas piles of clutter have a more distant, unfinished energy. And it can really exude a strong feeling of procrastination and avoidance. This is primarily because of unresolved emotions. That we have [00:02:00] around these particular items, which is exactly the reason why we avoid these piles in the first place.
So as an example, In our old house before our house fire, my nightstand drawers were stuffed full of books, books that I wanted to read, some were novels, but most of them were educational books that I wanted to learn more about. Like there was one that was all about ADHD for my son. And I had a book about. Um, Kind of redefining the rules that we set for our kids. I also had a book on death and dying to help me cope with the loss of my mother and my last three living grandparents. And these books were in my nightstand drawers because I wanted to prioritizing reading more before bed instead of working on my computer.
And I also wanted to make those specific subjects a priority in my life.
But every time I would declutter my nightstand, I would [00:03:00] avoid those books like the plague. I would take them out and immediately, without a second thought, I would immediately decide that I was keeping them. Then I would clean them off, and put them back and I never even entertained the thought of why I was choosing to keep those books when I hadn't even opened them once.
And the answer to that is so simple. It's because there were unresolved emotions around those books. They were aspirational clutter. I was aspiring to read more. But when I did nt make it a priority, when I get in make it happen, it created an energy of avoidance. Which in turn led to me, avoiding the clutter, avoiding those books. And the reason why this is such a problem is because when we're surrounded by things that we no longer love or find useful, Our lives can lack direction. I relate to this so strongly right now in [00:04:00] the opposite way actually, I do not have things that I love in my home because I have not made it a priority to acquire things that I love ever since our house fire. Everything that we have in this house, we got for free. With the exception of a few things that I got for Christmas and some things that I bought for myself, like I, I got some silk pillowcases and other things, small things like that, but. When I look around my house, there's nothing that I really love. And so as a result, My life is really lacking direction right now. I just kind of look around and I feel an empty feeling.
Anyway, where I'm going with this is that I want you to clear away the things that you no longer love from the area around your bed, because it will give you massive clarity and direction in the coming year. And plus clutter next to your bed [00:05:00] symbolizes a desire for change. So if you have clutter in your nightstand or around it, I will bet that you have a deep desire to make a change. Maybe that's making a change in your home, your relationship or just in your general life.
And in order to clear away this clutter, you will need to sit with what's coming up for you. As is the case with the books in my old nightstand and how I kept avoiding them. What I should have done is pull the books out and ask myself, why am I avoiding these? Why am I holding onto these items? What am I trying to accomplish by saving them? And then I needed to sit with those answers and really tune into what was coming up for me. I needed to allow my thoughts and emotions to come through as I really identified and got super clear on [00:06:00] those answers. Because those answers will change your life. Truly.
When you allow yourself to sit with these items that you have been holding on to, when you allow yourself to sit with the clutter that you're avoiding, and ask yourself these questions, ask yourself why you're avoiding them, why you're holding on to these things and what you're trying to accomplish by saving them.
And then you allow yourself to really get clear on these answers. Those answers that come through will be the clue and the clarity that you need to finally let those items go. And once you do, you will initiate the change that you desire to make. It will truly change your life.
So for day four of the new year, new space decluttering challenge, choose an area like your nightstand or next to your bed. Identify a [00:07:00] few items that you have been holding on to out of avoidance. And then, allow yourself to get clear on why you're avoiding them, why you're saving them. And then guide yourself through the process of letting them go. Because I promise you can let go of anything as long as you guide yourself through it. Don't avoid what's coming up.
Remember that your clutter is a mirror for what's going on internally. When you can sit with that and allow yourself to truly feel the emotions, they will move through your body in just a couple of minutes. And then it will be much, much easier for you to let those items go with love and grace.
Now as always, you can reach out to me if you have any questions and I would love to see your before and after photos. Remember that the goal is not to let go of as much as you can [00:08:00] today. Instead, the goal is to clear space and let go of items that have been accumulating and holding you back for a while. Because letting go of these things, even if it's just a couple of items, will open up so many doors of possibility in the coming year. So send me your before and after photos. And let today's task be invigorating and energizing for you.
