Day 7 - Bedroom Closet
===
[00:00:00] Hello, hello and welcome back to day seven of the new year, new space decluttering challenge. Today is our last day. We're going to be diving into clearing the clutter from your bedroom closet.
Now in my paid programs and courses, when I have my students decluttering their closet, I have them choose a specific decluttering method that they want to use in order to clear the clutter from their closet. And that is really the power of investing in a decluttering course, because you can choose from a wide variety of methods and frameworks to help you demolish your clutter with ease. But for today's quick and dirty de cluttering task, I'm going to share with you one method that you can follow that really feels motivating and pretty easy to accomplish.
I really feel that it's important to have a decluttering method that feels motivating when you're focusing on your closet, because we have a lot more emotional [00:01:00] attachments woven into our clothing then other items throughout our house. Which is exactly why decluttering your closet feels so much more difficult. And of course, there are many, many reasons why we hold on to clothes that we no longer need. But I'm not really going to dive into that in this episode because these quick little challenge episodes are meant to be short and simple.
But essentially what you need to know is that if you're holding onto clothing in your closet, it's usually because of some kind of emotional attachment. Or because you're holding on out of scarcity.
So where I'm going with this is that the task of decluttering your closet and letting go of decades' worth of clothing can feel very heavy and difficult because of the fact that we have these attachments to our clothing items. And that's why many people end up avoiding it all together.
So then before you know it, 5, 10 years have passed and your [00:02:00] closet is bursting at the scenes literally, and you can't even figure out what's lurking back there. But this method that we're going to be using today is one way to create space in your closet kind of for a little trial run. And in the process, you will be unconsciously breaking your attachment to these clothing items.
It's called reverse de cluttering. So here's how it works. First and foremost, you will decide which section of your closet and you want to do this for. Now this method is typically used to declutter your entire closet, but for today, we're going to be focusing on one small section. So for this task, I highly encourage you to choose a category of clothes, like a small section of clothes in your closet that you have not worn in over a year.
And then you will be ready to get started. So if there are items in that section that you chose, that you wear [00:03:00] frequently or clothing items that you specifically want to save, go ahead and move them elsewhere in your closet.
Now I personally do not believe that we should set a timeline or a quantity for whether or not we should keep or save an article of clothing just because we haven't worn it in a certain amount of time, because the answer is very personal, and you will be the only one who knows what that means for you.
So I recommend just scanning through the section that you're focusing on for today. And if you identify clothes that you want to keep, simply pull them out and move them to another section in your closet. Next for step three, you will bag up everything that is still left in that one section. Seriously, you'll bag it all up because it's only a temporary decision. And then finally, you will move those clothes that you bagged up to a storage space elsewhere in your home. And then you'll set an [00:04:00] alarm on your phone to go off in maybe three or six months when you can come back and reevaluate those clothing items.
So let's go over a more specific example very quickly. Let's say for step one of deciding which section of your closet that you want to do this for, let's say that you choose a small section of clothes you haven't worn in over a year, like maybe, um, sweat shirts and sweaters, for example.
Now this example that I'm going with, this is just something I'm pulling off the top of my head.
It doesn't really matter what section you choose. I'm just trying to come up with something quickly. Like sweatshirts and sweaters is a category of clothes for a quick example, but maybe you're choosing just a random section of stuff in the back of your closet that has a wide variety of different categories. Again, it doesn't matter. I just want to be more specific with the example here. Then, for stept ttwowhen you're ready to get started, you want to scan through and quickly identify if there are any clothing [00:05:00] items in that area that you want to keep in your closet. So you will just pull out any sweaters or sweatshirts and move them closer to another section of your closet. And then for step three, you will bag up all of the rest of the sweaters and the sweatshirts in that one section of your closet.
And finally for step four, you will take those clothes that you bagged up. And you will move them to a separate storage area in your home. And then you can set an alarm on your phone to go off sometime in the near future.
Now this reverse decluttering method is so powerful because it allows you to create a lot of space in your closet right off the bat. It allows you to be super ruthless because you still have these unwanted clothes packed away in a box somewhere.
You're not actively getting rid of them right now. Instead you're moving them to the side [00:06:00] so that way you can really practice living with less and really getting a feel for how freeing it can be.
It's not a definitive decision. You're just practicing having more space almost as a trial run. You're halfway acknowledging that you don't love and need to save these clothes anymore. And then at a later time, you can come back and reevaluate those items. And I'll bet that when you come back after living with less in your closet for some time, You will come back and you will not want to bring those things back into your closet. You will have broken the attachment that you once had to those clothes, and you will be able to recognize that you do not need them in order to live your life to the fullest like you once thought you did.
So the most important thing that I want you to remember here is to be ruthless. Keep in mind that our [00:07:00] bodies, our style, and our clothes change as often as the seasons. There is no reason for you to keep something that you have not worn, something that does not fit, or that you do not love. Even if you feel like someday, you might get back into that same size again, even if you do get back to that same size. You're going to want to buy new clothes. And with the availability of clothes being delivered to our doorsteps in less than two days, and the fast fashion industry, you could literally buy new clothing for less than $10.
So on the one hand with the rise of fast fashion and Amazon delivery, it definitely has not helped America's clutter problem, because it is so easy to buy what we need and therefore the clutter is continuing to pile up in people's homes. . But on the other hand, it has tremendously helped those who tend to hold on to things out of scarcity.[00:08:00]
So if you've been saving clothes that don't fit you because you feel like you won't be able to afford to buy new ones once you do lose the weight. Well, that is truly no longer an issue because of apps like Shein and Temu where you can get things for less than $10. And trust me, I say this from experience.
I have spent my entire adult life living paycheck to paycheck. And I never had many clothes even before our house fire. And then I gained a bunch of weight during COVID and I had to buy all new things that fit me. So when I did this, I could not afford to go out and drop hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a new wardrobe. Instead, I used apps like Shein and Temu and Amazon, and I found what I could for less than a hundred dollars.
So I bring this all up to you because those days of holding on to old clothing items is a thing of the past. You can instead be [00:09:00] ruthless by letting go of everything you do not wear does not fit you, or you do not absolutely love. But let's get back to our challenge task for today. We're focusing on reverse de cluttering in your closet. So in terms of the step-by-step directions to implement this in your home.
First, you will choose a section that you want to do this task for.
Then you will identify if there are any items that you do want to save. If so, you will quickly move them to another space in your closet. And then I want you to be ruthless in bagging up all the items that you do not wear, or do not love from that one section. Then you'll move them to a storage space, you'll label the box so you can easily identify what's inside. And be sure and set a reminder on your phone for three or six months so that way you can come back and finalize the decluttering [00:10:00] of these items.
The goal is not to just move these items elsewhere in your home and then forget about them and keep them there indefinitely, because that is not true decluttering. That's just moving things from one space to another, and it causes you to just leave the clutter still in your house and still taking up your precious brain space.
The goal for today is to practice living with less. And then in a few months, Come back and allow yourself to let those items go with grace, because you will have broken your attachment to these clothes. So it will be much easier for you to accept that saving them is really doing you more harm than good.
