[00:00:00] I'm going to go live on Instagram.
And then we're going to get into it. So hello, hello, hello. Come on in. Come on in. We are here today to talk about exactly where to start the cluttering. Now you're here because you want to declutter, but. You're not exactly sure where to start and the reason why that's happening is because there are a lot of different types of things that are causing you trouble in your home.
So there's stuff scattered all over your flat surfaces and what I call the surface layer of your home. All that stuff that you can see with the naked eye that you don't know what to do with. And then you also have true clutter that's piled up behind closed doors. Well, the good news is that by the end of this short little live session, black and white, where I could say, Hey, Lindsay, you [00:01:00] should start decluttering in your bathroom or Hey, Jessica, you should start in your bedroom.
But it doesn't work that way because of the fact that we all have different households, different circumstances, different habits and different belongings. So there's no way on earth for me or any expert to say you should start here. And I know that. that It's normal to to wonder this I I trust me I have been there when you look around your entire house that is Packed to the ceiling with stuff or overflowing the stuff and you feel you literally feel overwhelmed It's normal to not know where to start but I do have a formula that will help you figure out where to start and There are several points that I want to make to help you Really fully understand this.
So let's get into it. Now first and foremost we tend to think that All that [00:02:00] stuff in our homes all that chaos all the things that are giving you trouble We tend to think that it's it's just one we treat it as the same you look at it and see it as Oh, this is clutter. This is this is chaos. This is mess but There are actually three distinct types of items that are giving you trouble in your home and they can't all be treated the same way.
So this is what I call the big three messes. First, you have the everyday messes, then you have the homeless items, and then you also have accumulated clutter. And these three, big three messes, these three specific types of items, they need to be handled individually with different home life concepts. So tidying up and putting things back where they belong, that takes care of the everyday messes.
Because the messes are the things in your home that You know where they belong, they're [00:03:00] just not getting put there. So in order to tackle the everyday messes, you need to tidy them all up and you need to put them back where they belong. Then you've got the accumulated clutter. That is the stuff that's piling up.
It's piling up in a corner or it's piling up in a closet or it may even be a large pile in the middle of, you know, your coffee table, for example. Well, the cluttering takes care of the accumulated clutter, right? So, when it comes to these large piles of things, the solution is to sort through and figure out what you should let go of.
The goal is to let go of as much as you possibly can, and so you really need to be sorting through and making a decision on what you want to keep and what you should be letting go of. So, we've got tidying that takes care of the everyday messes, which is all the things in your home. That you know where they go, you just need to put them away.
Like this fidget thingy on my desk that I was playing with. This belongs in my son's room. [00:04:00] I can tidy up and put this where it goes. If I have accumulated clutter sitting next to my desk, I need to declutter that by sorting through it and deciding what I want to keep and letting go of as much as possible.
And then finally we have the homeless items. The homeless items are in a league of their own because there is not a home life concept. Like tidying decluttering and organizing. There's nothing that is really going to help you take care of the homeless items Because of the fact that they're homeless because of the fact that you have no clue what to do with them Which is why they're homeless The reason why the homeless items are piling up and left out is because you don't have any room to put them anywhere You don't know where to where to what to do with them and the problem comes in when you have All three of these Things all three of these types of of stuff these big three messes when you have all three of them all over your entire house It's when that happens when they're all over your [00:05:00] entire house.
It's not enough to just tidy the everyday messes in your office and then clear away the clutter next to your desk because what will always happen is the messes will creep back out again and again and again. The everyday messes will continue to get left out and the homeless clutter will keep piling up.
The reason why, the reason why these messes are creeping back out is because there is too much stuff, there is too much clutter taking up all of your storage spaces. So, as an example, Let's say you have a stack of homeless clutter. We'll go with my desk, because I'm sitting at my desk. Let's say there was a stack of homeless clutter behind me, and it was just a bunch of stuff that I wanted to keep, but I didn't know what to do with.
Well, the reason why it's hard to find somewhere to put the homeless clutter is because there is no storage space in your house, because it's full of stuff. So, as another [00:06:00] example, if you've got You know makeup and cleaning supplies and kids toys, etc Well, those items are getting left out because of the fact that you live in your home and you use them daily, right?
so When you don't have any room to put them somewhere like the cleaning supplies and the makeup You don't have any room to put your makeup in your bathroom cabinets You don't have any room to put new cleaning supplies under your sink because there's already too much makeup and cleaning supplies under your cabinet So what happens is they get left out the makeup and the cleaning supplies get left out because there's too much clutter taking up all of your storage spaces.
So what this comes down to is that leaves you with the messes that are on the surface layer of your home that you need to get under control on top of the clutter, the accumulated clutter that is piling up behind closed doors that you need to sort through and decide what to let go of. [00:07:00] And that is the reason why when it comes to figuring out where to start, it's not just a simple, Lindsay, you should start in your, in your bathroom, or Helen, you should start in your kitchen, because knowing where to start decluttering is a matter of tackling both the messes and the clutter.
But as I'm sure you know, if you're trying to do that all at the same time, that's a recipe for disaster. Trying to tackle both the messes and the clutter at the exact same time is, it's kind of similar to trying to, to clutter and organize at the same time. It just makes a huge mess and it never leads to any long term sustainable progress.
Because, as I just shared, your house will just get messy and cluttered all over again. So the solution, when you have clutter and messes, when you have messes all over the surface layer of your home and you also have clutter taking up your storage [00:08:00] spaces behind closed doors. The solution is to prioritize a step zero before you start the cluttering, the accumulated clutter.
Now, this is what I call overhauling, and the reason why it's a step zero is because it's not always necessary. Not every one of you that are watching this live session right now will need to do this. Not every one of you will have messes on the surface layer of your home. And the reason why we get so confused about this is because the cluttering is way too broad of a term.
On my, um, Okay, I was making sure I wasn't on Wi Fi on my phone on Instagram, and making sure I'm still live on Facebook. Okay, it just all of a sudden popped up and said, You're not online. And on that note, that's because yesterday my son spilled juice on our modem, and It was a disaster. I called our internet provider, and they were able to reboot it, and it was [00:09:00] working somewhat okay, but it's been a little spotty, and on top of that, my car's in the shop, so I can't just go buy a new, or pick up a new modem right now, so it's definitely been a week.
Anyways, I was saying that, um, Overhauling is another home life concept. It's something that I came up with years ago, because I was, I was decluttering like a boss. I was clearing away a lot of clutter, and literally sorting through decades worth of stuff. But my house was getting messier than ever, and I, for the life of me, couldn't figure out why.
And it wasn't until I strategically started to analyze the types of items that were giving me trouble in my home, and I realized that, The more that I decluttered, the more I came across things I wanted to keep, the more I moved them to the inside of my house, and they were homeless items. I didn't know what to do with them.
And I, I realized that decluttering wasn't going to help me handle these homeless items because I didn't want to let them go. So I came up with overhauling. It's my proprietary [00:10:00] method that will help you get control over the messes once and for all. It's Overhauling is designed to help you literally overhaul the areas in your home that are out of control.
The, the areas that have everyday messes, homeless clutter, and accumulated clutter. And the good news is that once you have overhauled every room in your house, your home will be tidy. Everything will be put where it belongs. All the everyday messes will be put away The homeless clutter will be non existent because you will have found a home for all of it.
And best of all, you will have peace of mind, sanity, clarity, and confidence. And you will have built the momentum so you are excited to dive head first into decluttering and clearing away the accumulated clutter. You will truly have a neat and tidy home that looks straight out of a [00:11:00] magazine. And all that will be left is for you to start decluttering like a boss and start learning how to let go of the excess stuff.
So that way you can create more space in your home. That way you can Let go of all that stuff that's piling up in your cabinets, your closets, your drawers, your bins. And then you will have more space, more breathing room for the items that you use daily. And that means that they won't get left out all the time.
The messes won't keep getting left out because you will have space to keep them put away. So let me know in the comments if this is making so much sense to you because every time I have taught this to my clients and students, their minds are literally blown. And I can tell you, I wish that somebody had told me this years ago when I first started my decluttering journey.
It would have saved me so much, so much time. I, I missed out on years with my kids. Years were the memories with my kids because I was trying to put the pieces together on my own [00:12:00] and I didn't have someone. to tell me how it worked. I was just, you know, figuring it out as I went along. And because of that, it literally took me almost four years to declutter my entire house and create an organized space for my family.
So let me know in the comments, if this makes sense, and we're going to get into the answer, the formula, the answer for where you should start decluttering. So here it is. Are you ready? If you have messes on the surface layer of your home, If you have things left out in your house that you want to keep, you start with overhauling.
You start by overhauling the messes and dealing with all that stuff that's left out. All that stuff that's stressing you out and, and all that stuff that you can see with the naked eye. And when it comes to overhauling, you want to start in your main living spaces, like a kitchen, A dining room or a living room, nowhere [00:13:00] else.
Choose one of those three areas. The, um, the, you want to choose one of those three main living spaces that are most in need of a change. So, if it's your kitchen, your dining room, or your living room. You know one of those spaces is going to be more messy and cluttered than the other It's typically somebody's dining room table or their kitchen counters And it's again, it's gonna it's gonna be different for everyone because we all have different habits and different circumstances So if you again if you have messes left out Throughout your house that you want to keep You can't declutter them.
You just don't know what to do with them The answer is for you to start overhauling your kitchen living room, dining room, or your kitchen. And then when you're ready to declutter, when you, when you're only left with piles of clutter, some of you may only have clutter that you need to tackle. Some of you may first overhaul and then move on to decluttering.
[00:14:00] So when you're ready to start clearing away the accumulated clutter, when you only have clutter that you need to tackle, The answer for where to start is that you need to target the true clutter that is behind closed doors. So you will choose an area of your home that will most benefit you if it were free of clutter.
And that is the answer for where you will start. So, to explain this a little bit more, um, as you all may know, we had a house fire last year and We're renting a house and it's a little bit smaller than our the house that we lost in the fire But most importantly we don't have a garage this room that i'm in right now is a den And when we first moved here, I was like, oh, this is gonna be so great I can put my office here and I didn't even think about the fact that we would have no storage spaces So what is ultimately ended up happening?
Mommy's on the class. Okay I don't know but I would say go out there. Don't let the dogs in [00:15:00] please So what ultimately ended up happening was we started using this den for storage spaces. And so when I think about decluttering, I always come back to this den and think in my mind, like, it would really benefit me to declutter the corner of this den that I'm looking at right now, because, and what I need to do is get, like, a shelf.
The problem is, As I have acquired more decorations like Christmas Decker, Halloween Decker, you know, spring Decker, et cetera, I didn't have anywhere to put it. So it's just kind of like stacking up in these totes in the corner of the room. And where I'm going with this is I have, I know like it will benefit me so much to have that corner of my den dec cluttered.
And so when you are ready to start clearing away the accumulated clutter. You will know which area will benefit you the most. It, it, it, it's gonna come, it's gonna, it's gonna be different for all of [00:16:00] you, but you can just do a quick little gut check and ask yourself, which of these spaces that is, that has clutter hidden away, whether it's, you know, hidden in a corner of a den, or it's piling up in your master closet, or it's a stack of clutter in your garage, or it's, You know, tucked away in your basement, or even if you have it hidden under a blanket in your living room, figure out which of those spaces will most benefit you.
Which of those spaces do you most want to declutter? And that is the answer for where you start decluttering. Now I know a few people have joined on Instagram since I started going over this formula for where to start decluttering, so I'm going to say it again very quickly. If you have messes on the surface layer of your home, If you have things left out that you can see with your naked eye that you want to keep that you cannot declutter, then the answer for where to start is to overhaul those messes by [00:17:00] tackling the everyday messes and the homeless clutter.
That's the answer for where to start when you have a bunch of messes left out. And then when you're ready to start clearing away the accumulated clutter that is piling up behind closed doors. whether you only have accumulated clutter or whether you have first overhauled the messes and then you're moving on to the clutter when you're ready to tackle and declutter the accumulated piles of stuff, then you want to choose one area that has hidden clutter that's piling up behind closed doors.
Choose one area that will most benefit you. And that is the answer for where you should start decluttering. Now, That's it. That is exactly how to know where you should start. So let me know in the comments if you have any questions. I would love to support you with this because as I said, this is like the number one reason why people are unable to start.
It's the number one thing that holds people [00:18:00] back from decluttering because they look around at all this stuff in their home and they just feel so overwhelmed. So, feel free to drop a question in the comments. Tell me what's, um, What you're experiencing in your home and I can help you figure out where you should start and While y'all are dropping comments Questions down in the comments.
